ATTENTION EDITORS, CORRESPONDENTS, DAYBOOK EDITORS:

The Federal Election Commission has scheduled a public hearing for November 18 at 10 a.m. at the FEC, 999 E St. NW, to discuss a proposed rulemaking on "soft money" – funds raised and spent outside the restrictions of the Federal Election Campaign Act.

The hearing was previously set for October 21, but has been rescheduled at the request of one of the commenters, the National Republican Senatorial Committee.

Comment period for the proposed rulemaking ended October 2. The FEC received 81 comments (34 electronic and 47 mailed) submitted in response to the Notice of Proposed Rulemaking published on July 13, 1998 in the Federal Register (63 FR 37722).
